They are under pressure, and if you turn the radiator pressure cap even a little they can come out at high speed. Never turn the cap when the cooling system, including the radiator pressure cap, is hot. You can remove the radiator pressure cap when the cooling system, including the radiator pressure cap and upper radiator hose, is no longer hot.
Turn the pressure cap slowly counterclockwise until it first stops. If you hear a hiss, wait for that to stop. Fill the radiator with the proper DEX coolant mixture, up to the base of the filler neck. Then fill the coolant recovery tank to the ADD mark. Page 6. Start the engine and let it run until you can feel the upper radiator hose getting hot. Watch out for the engine cooling fan. By this time, the coolant level inside the radiator filler neck may be lower.
When the clutch is engaged, the fan spins faster to provide more air to cool the engine. In most everyday driving conditions, the clutch is not fully engaged. This improves fuel economy and reduces fan noise. Turn on your hazard warning flashers. The vehicle can slip off the jack and roll over you or other people. Remove the jack cover by pulling it away from the side wall and down to release the tabs securing the top of the cover. Page Your compact spare tire is stored underneath the rear of your vehicle.
You will use the ratchet and extension to lower the spare tire. The ratchet has an UP side. It also has a DOWN side. Attach the ratchet, with the DOWN side facing you, to the extension. Page Put the flat end of the extension on an angle through the hole in the rear door frame, above the bumper. Be sure the flat end connects into the hoist shaft. Turn the ratchet counterclockwise to lower the spare tire to the ground. Removing the Wheel Covers You will have to take off hub caps or wheel nut caps to reach your wheel nuts.
Styled Steel Wheel Shown If you have the styled steel wheel or aluminum wheel with plastic nut caps, loosen the plastic nut caps with the ratchet and socket. Before you start, block the front and rear of the tire farthest away from the one being changed. Then put your compact spare tire near the flat tire. With the DOWN side facing you, use the ratchet and socket to loosen all the wheel nuts.
Page 4. Attach the ratchet to the extension with the UP side facing you. Turn the ratchet clockwise. That will raise the jack lift head a little. Position the jack under the vehicle. Page Front Position A. Front Jack Location B. Jack C. Ratchet and Extension Rear Position A. Rear Jack Location B. Ratchet and Extension If the vehicle slips off the jack, you could be badly injured or killed.
Never get under a vehicle when it is supported only by a jack. Page 9. Remove any rust or dirt from the wheel bolts, mounting surfaces and spare wheel. The wheel could come off and cause an accident. Page Tighten the wheel nuts firmly in a crisscross sequence as shown. Turn the ratchet clockwise with the UP mark facing you. Lower the vehicle by turning the ratchet counterclockwise. Lower the jack completely. This could lead to an accident. Be sure to use the correct wheel nuts.
If you have to replace them, be sure to get new GM original equipment wheel nuts. In a sudden stop or collision, loose equipment could strike someone. Store all these in the proper place. Page Compact Spare Tire 5. Make sure the tire is stored securely. Push, pull, and then try to rotate or turn the tire. Return the jacking equipment to its proper location. The compact spare can get caught on the rails.
That can damage the tire and wheel, and maybe other parts of your vehicle. If you spin the wheels too fast while shifting your transmission back and forth, you can destroy your transmission. Page Section 6 Service and Appearance Care Here you will find information about the care of your vehicle. This section begins with service and fuel information, and then it shows how to check important fluid and lubricant levels. There is also technical information about your vehicle, and a part devoted to its appearance care.
Be sure you have sufficient knowledge, experience, the proper replacement parts and tools before you attempt any vehicle maintenance task.
Page Be sure the posted octane is at least If the octane is less than 87, you may get a heavy knocking noise when you drive. It can corrode metal parts in your fuel system and also damage plastic and rubber parts.
Fuels in Foreign Countries If you plan on driving in another country outside the United States or Canada, the proper fuel may be hard to find. Page To remove the cap, turn it slowly to the left counterclockwise. The cap has a spring in it; if you let go of the cap too soon, it will spring back to the right.
Page Filling A Portable Fuel Container When you put the cap back on, turn it to the right clockwise until you hear a clicking sound. Make sure you fully install the cap. The diagnostic system can determine if the fuel cap has been left off or improperly installed.
These include liquids like fuel, oil, coolant, brake fluid, windshield washer and other fluids, and plastic or rubber. You or others could be burned. Pull out the dipstick and clean it with a paper towel or cloth, then push it back in all the way.
Do not use any oil which does not carry this starburst symbol. These numbers on an oil container show its viscosity, or thickness. Change the oil and filter every 7, miles 12 km or 12 months occurs first.
Driving a vehicle with a fully warmed engine under highway conditions causes engine oil to break down slower. Remove the instrument panel extension by removing the two nuts that secure it in place. Remove the screws located near the top on each side of the extension.
Disconnect the electrical connectors and set the 5. Grasp the top of the heater duct and pull down gently extension aside. Remove the two bolts at the engine cover. The bolts are not supposed to come out of the cover, only from the front of the dash. When removing the cover, be careful not to damage the instrument panel or the trim. Lift the engine cover into the vehicle and slide it all the way forward. Make sure the rubber seal is over the latches.
Install the two bolts at the engine cover. Put the heater duct over the engine cover studs. Push up on the duct gently until it snaps into place. The air cleaner not only cleans the air, it stops flame if the engine backfires.
Page How To Check How to Check Because this operation can be a little difficult, you may choose to have this done at the dealership service department.
If you do it yourself, be sure to follow all the instructions here, or you could get a false reading on the dipstick. Page Checking the Fluid Level Prepare your vehicle as follows: Park your vehicle on a level place.
Keep the engine running. With your foot on the brake pedal, move the shift lever through each gear range, pausing for about three seconds in each range. Page How To Add Fluid 3. Check both sides of the dipstick, and read the lower level.
The fluid level must be in the COLD area, below the cross hatched area, for a cold check or in the HOT area or cross hatched area for a hot check. Page Transfer Case Wheel Drive If Equipped If you have an all wheel drive vehicle, be sure to perform the lubricant checks described in this section.
However, they have two additional systems that need lubrication. This coolant is designed to remain in your vehicle for 5 years or , miles km , whichever occurs first, if you add only COOL R extended life coolant. Plain water, or some other liquid like alcohol, can boil before the proper coolant mixture will. The vehicle must be on a level surface. When your engine is cold, the coolant level should be at ADD, or a little higher.
Page Radiator Pressure Cap Occasionally check the coolant level in the radiator. Page Power Steering Fluid Power Steering Fluid When to Check Power Steering Fluid It is not necessary to regularly check power steering fluid unless you suspect there is a leak in the system or you hear an unusual noise. A fluid loss in this system could indicate a problem. Add washer fluid until the tank is full. There are only two reasons why the brake fluid level in the reservoir might go down.
The first is that the brake fluid goes down to an acceptable level during normal brake lining wear. Page Checking Brake Fluid You can check the brake fluid without taking off the cap. Just look at the brake fluid reservoir. The fluid level should be above MIN. Also, the rear brake drums should be removed and inspected each time the tires are removed for rotation or changing. When you have the front brake pads replaced, have the rear brakes inspected, too.

If you ever have questions about your tire warranty and where to obtain service, see your Vehicle Warranty booklet for details. Overloading your tires can cause overheating as a result of too much friction. Page The purpose of regular rotation is to achieve more uniform wear for all tires on the vehicle.
The first rotation is the most important. When rotating your tires, always use the correct rotation pattern shown here. You need a new tire if any of the following statements are true: You can see the indicators at three or more places around the tire. If you mix tires of different sizes or types radial and bias belted tires , the vehicle may not handle properly, and you could have a crash.
Using tires of different sizes may also cause damage to your vehicle. Page Treadwear The treadwear grade is a comparative rating based on the wear rate of the tire when tested under controlled conditions on a specified government test course. Page Wheel Replacement Wheel Alignment and Tire Balance The wheels on your vehicle were aligned and balanced carefully at the factory to give you the longest tire life and best overall performance.
Scheduled wheel alignment and wheel balancing are not needed. However, if you notice unusual tire wear or your vehicle pulling one way or the other, the alignment may need to be reset. It could fail suddenly and cause an accident. If you have to replace a wheel, use a new GM original equipment wheel.
Some are toxic. Others can burst into flame if you strike a match or get them on a hot part of the vehicle. Some are dangerous if you breathe their fumes in a closed space.
Page Special Fabric Cleaning Problems Here are some cleaning tips: Always read the instructions on the cleaner label. Clean up stains as soon as you can Carefully scrape off any excess stain.
Use a clean cloth or sponge, and change to a clean area often. A soft brush may be used if stains are stubborn. Rub with a clean, damp cloth to remove dirt. You may have to do it more than once. GM Glass Cleaner or a liquid household glass cleaner will remove normal tobacco smoke and dust films on interior glass.
Use a car washing soap. Page Cleaning Aluminum Wheels If necessary, use non abrasive cleaners that are marked safe for painted surfaces to remove foreign matter. Exterior painted surfaces are subject to aging, weather and chemical fallout that can take their toll over a period of years. You can help to keep the paint finish looking new by keeping your vehicle garaged or covered whenever possible. Page Chemical Paint Spotting Finish Damage Any stone chips, fractures or deep scratches in the finish should be repaired right away.
Bare metal will corrode quickly and may develop into a major repair expense. Minor chips and scratches can be repaired with touch materials available from your dealer or other service outlets. You can see it if you look through the windshield from outside your vehicle. Some add on electrical equipment can keep other components from working as they should. Page Fuses And Circuit Breakers Fuses and Circuit Breakers The wiring circuits in your vehicle are protected from short circuits by a combination of fuses, circuit breakers and fusible thermal links.
This greatly reduces the chance of fires caused by electrical problems. Look at the silver colored band inside the fuse. When adding, be sure to fill to the appropriate level or as recommended in this manual. English and metric conversions are given.
